Food packaging adhesives: What is a food safe adhesive and why are vegan adhesives becoming increasingly popular?

At Beardow Adams we have been manufacturing hot melt adhesives for the food industry for over 40 years. We understand that food and drink manufacturers need high-performance adhesives to safeguard the quality and safety of their products.

Food safety

Approximately 50% of globally manufactured packaging is used for food. Knowing the demands of this market, we, at Beardow Adams, select our raw materials carefully for the manufacture of our adhesives to meet the high standards of the food industry. Our BAMFutura™ adhesive range runs clean, is odourless, colourless, does not readily char and easy to handle, with superior adhesion to a wide range of food packaging materials.

Nowadays, most boxes for food packaging are manufactured from recycled materials. This is a concern for the food industry as well as the packaging industry. This is due to a risk of harmful substances migrating from the packaging material into the food. Therefore, this type of packaging needs an additional barrier to protect the food products against a potential migration of, for example, varnish or print ink components. The barrier function is provided by films, or by coatings that are applied to onto the inside of the box. Our BAMFutura adhesives are developed to bond the most difficult barrier coatings and have superior adhesion to surfaces with finishing, film lamination or varnish coatings.

Food regulations and standards

The packaging materials that encounter food must follow strict rules to safeguard food quality and safety. The EU’s Framework Regualtion, for example, requires that packaging materials that come into contact with food should not:

- Harm human health
- Change the compositoin of the food
- Change the taste and odour of the food

At Beardow Adams, we work closely together with manufacturers in the food industry and where applicable, make sure we follow the guidelines of the European 10/2011 regulations and the American FDA 175.105 regulations. Additionally, in 2016 we became the first adhesive manufacturer to receive the British Retail Consortium Global Standard's (BRCGS) packaging certification. This means that we manufacture packaging adhesives within this standard; the certification ensures adhesives are produced in an environment suitable for use in the food and beverage market. The BRCGS packaging certification is a globally recognised award which ensures satisfactory manufacturing processes and a commitment to delivering the highest standards. We hold the BRCGS certification for our UK BAMFutura packaging line as well as for a number of other non-BAMFutura grades.

Vegan adhesives are becoming increasingly popular among food manufacturers

Supermarket shelves are increasingly lined with vegan-approved food and drink products. To meet the demands of consumers seeking a product that adheres to the principles of veganism, manufacturers are now having to purchase or produce vegan safe adhesives. This is where Beardow Adams comes in. Our vegan hot-melt grade BAMFutura™ 43VE has already exceptional stability and clean-running properties. This product is a V-Label and FDA approved packaging adhesive that’s ideal for the likes of case and carton sealing.

BAMFutura 43VE is a metallocene-based adhesive that contains no animal-derived substances, with exceptional stability and clean-running properties. It offers the very same qualities as our BAMFutura 43 adhesive with the exception that it is vegan certified. The adhesive is water white, has a low-odour and is a versatile packaging adhesive that is happy at lower ambient temperature.
