Grant Thornton’s MK50 report supported by Beardow Adams Group CEO

Beardow Adams Group CEO Adrian Day joined Mike Hughes, Corporate Finance Director at financial and business advisers Grant Thornton LLP, on Wednesday, 26th February 2020 at an event which launched the first edition of the company’s ‘MK50’.

Grant Thornton’s MK50 is a research report which gives a ‘unique insight’ into the financial performance of the top 50 businesses in Milton Keynes, in both the private and public markets. Businesses evaluated can be locally owned but also international.

The study is highly insightful but also highlights the success of Milton Keynes businesses and gives them deserved recognition which they might not otherwise receive. Beardow Adams is pleased to announce that we featured on the MK top 50 list.

“It has been a wonderful week for Beardow Adams, what with winning two categories at the Insider Media Made in Central and East of England Awards and now presenting at the launch of MK50 with Grant Thornton.

“Beardow Adams is such a great company to be a part of, and I’m very proud that we’ve made the list of the top 50 companies in Milton Keynes – a business community that continues to flourish,” said Adrian Day.

Milton Keynes is one of the fastest growing cities in the UK and the Beardow Adams Group is proud to have its headquarters at its heart. Our Milton Keynes facility is the largest single site hot-melt adhesive plant in Europe and the products we manufacture in this city are bought by and exported to customers in over 70 countries across the globe.

The extent to which Milton Keynes businesses are focusing on and prospering in international markets was an area the MK50 report highlighted. The study’s overview also revealed that ‘Milton Keynes-based businesses have, on the whole, enjoyed a strong year of growth as they continue to prosper in a largely robust local economy, delivering significant increases in turnover and employment.’

In contrast, the report additionally stated that the data reflects ‘a year where, across the UK, Brexit and political uncertainty dominated the agenda, and many businesses experienced market weaknesses, whether that be in consumer spending and confidence, capital investment or property and infrastructure.’

MK50 is compiled using the most recent publicly available accounts (as of January 2020) of the largest companies, based on turnover, with significant operations in Milton Keynes. The results are derived from the current and previous year’s company accounts to allow a comparison between the two years.

The 2020 top 50 comprised of businesses from eight different sectors: the automotive and motor retail (27%), freight, logistics and aviation (18%), and retail and wholesale (17%) sectors were the top three. Other key findings revealed that the top 50’s overall turnover had grown by a healthy 6% with employee numbers increasing by 4.9%.

The full MK50 report can be requested from the Grant Thornton website. The company also produce a similar report for the area of Bedfordshire.
