Global trends in the publishing industry
Just like other industries, the publishing industry has been affected by the rising inflation which impacts the materials needed to manufacture books and magazines. The most significant of these are the paper shortages, increased shipping costs and shipping delays. To meet these challenges there has been a push towards local production with shorter, faster, and more agile supply chains.
Print-on-demand (POD) is becoming increasingly popular among book publishers as it allows them to exert more control over printing and inventory costs, with books printed only after an order is secured.
During the COVID-19 outbreak the demand for books increased considerably across the globe. The pandemic resulted in working from home for millions of people worldwide, which increased time available for leisure activities and hobbies among consumers. Books were desired by readers during this period of uncertainty to focus on self-development as well as to spend time at home productively. This has boosted the growth of the book market substantially.
Increasing popularity of eBooks and audiobooks
Books have changed significantly throughout their history, from papyrus scrolls to the introduction of e-books and audiobooks, the market has adapted itself into various forms. Research conducted by the Pew Research Centre shows that print books continue to be more popular than eBooks or audiobooks. Though, the amount of people who read an eBook went up from 17% to 30% and people who listened to an audiobook went up from 11% to 23%.
Competition from eBooks and audiobooks makes it more important than ever to use high quality materials and adhesives that deliver attractive, reader-friendly books.
Adhesives that have bookbinding covered
For high quality bookbinding hot melts must be tough, flexible, and have high adhesion. Our range of hot melts was developed to answer these needs – and more. The adhesives are produced with the highest quality raw materials, giving excellent thermal stability that prevents degradation.
BAM2398 is a high performance conventional hot melt, that can be used as an alternative for expensive and difficult to handle PUR adhesives. Plus, it can be used for both spine and side glue applications, reducing adhesive inventory.
As sustainability has become increasingly important, we also offer a bio-based alternative for bookbinding - combining Prodas 2278 with BAM 776 offers a bio-based solution for both spine and side gluing.
